Don’t Look Back
Romans 7:19 reads, “I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.” Philippians 3:13-14 reads, “No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”
What is the Apostle Paul telling us? We’re going to make mistakes because of the sinful nature we were born in to. So often memories of things I shouldn’t have done but I did, and things I should have done I didn’t, come to my mind. And we all know who this comes from. This is Satan’s way of making us feel guilty and distracts us from keeping our spiritual eyes focused on Jesus. We can’t let our past cause us to lose this focus and draw back. If we continue to look back, we will end up in a spiritual wreck. Hebrews 10:38 says, “Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draws back, My soul shall have no pleasure in him.”
Imagine it this way. You’re driving down the road. Instead of keeping your eyes focused ahead, you continue to look back, staring in the rear view mirror at what’s behind. If you’re not focused on what’s ahead, eventually you are going to end up in a physical wreck. So let’s not look back. Jesus is always there to forgive us of our sins. We need to do what the Apostle Paul tells us. This is worth repeating again. “Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”
